Summer Pike Fishing
Without doubt, summer is the best time of the year for catching highly active pike.
During the colder months pike can be fairly lethargic and put up little fight when hooked.
Should a weather front move in, or pike go on a feeding frenzy for some unbeknown reason, which can happen when you least expect it, pike can be highly active for up to six hours - if not longer!
Nothing is written in stone when it comes to pike fishing though!
Throughout the summer months I mainly lure fish for pike - simply because I find it the most productive/challenging/enjoyable method for enticing/triggering active pike to strike.
The really nice thing about summer lure fishing, i.e. for pike and chub, is seeing the take.
My specially designed top-water lures are in a class of their own for tempting big pike to strike.
During the summer months, you're almost guaranteed to have a few takes each day on lures.
More often than not, top-water lures get hit many times throughout the day - and very often by pike over 15-20lb. Believe me, this form of fishing is not for the weak hearted!
I also night fish for pike during the summer months with top-water lures - boy, that's something else!
Takes can happen right out of the blue, right up to boat-side - it's hairs raised on the back of your neck stuff! Frightening? - you bet it is!!
I have caught many hundreds of pike at night, but even I still jump when a big pike hits my lure and launches itself into flight - the almighty splash sending shivers down my spine!
There is only one way to find out just how you will react as a big pike slams/hits your lure - and that's to get out there and have a go at it!
