Fly Fishing For Pike - It's Great Fun!!

The biggest fly caught pike boated by one of my clients to date, stands at 28lb.

The magnificent pike was boated by Phil Mellor back in June 2001.

It was Phil's first ever guided pike fly fishing trip.

Fly fishing for pike, in my opinion, is one of the most challenging and enjoyable forms of fishing there is.

Some days/weeks/months flashy flies will totally out-fish other forms of artificial lure - or live/dead baits!

I feel sorry for lure anglers who have never tried it - believe me, it is far more enjoyable than launching big heavy lures to the horizon all day long.

The thing that I really love about fly fishing for pike, is the not knowing what the next pull on my line will produce. I have caught all manner of species on 'flashy' small-medium size flies - for example, roach, rudd, stone loach, perch, baby and giant chub, little and large pike, and some beautiful brown trout - not forgetting rainbow trout to 6lb.

Big trout, chub, perch, pike and zander will take a medium to large size fly when they're hungry.

When small to medium size predatory fish are not too hungry, or they're preoccupied mopping up small insect or aquatic life forms, a small, well presented fly, will totally out-fish medium to large size flies.

The key to fly fishing success is knowing what your target species are feeding on - then mimic it with a masterfully tied fly.

When it comes to small realistic flies, I have to rely on shop brought ones - as I can't tie a small realistic fly to save my life!

When it comes to tying big 'unrealistic' flies, for tempting big hungry chub, trout, pike and perch, mine own hand tied flies are in a class of their own!! I have found nothing to beat my marabou and sparkler flies.
The superb pike seen left, is my personal best pike on a fly so far.

Date of capture: April 30th 2003.

Weight: 27lb 8oz.

I named the above fly, which was tied specifically for my two day fly fishing holiday, 'Sparkler'.
If you've never tried your hand at fly fishing for pike, why not give it a go.

Simon Body, right, decided to have a days fly fishing with me in 2007 and look what he boated - and within an hour of starting!

The pike weighed 23-08 and gave Simon a really good scrap.

I'm sure Simon would agree with me when I say he was over the moon.

A 23.08 pike, on a 10 weight fly outfit, within one hour of his first trip out with me - what can you say to that?...!

Well done Simon!!

Hope you do well with the Kings later this year in Canada.
